Ocala, Florida — At Vanguard High School, the student members of a vibrant ChemClub are making waves — getting attention. In just three years, the group has grown rapidly in size and reach.
One of the key reasons for the group’s successes has been Ms. Eddy Rey-Castellanos, a dedicated teacher of IB Chemistry at the high school, who serves as the group’s teacher advisor. She expressed that the students’ dedication and energy has been very inspiring to watch. In the three years since the club started, the club has really become a welcoming place for students who are passionate about exploring chemistry through fun experiments and community engagement.
Powered by Rey-Castellanos' enthusiastic students, the ChemClub has flourished, boasting a membership of 46 students for the 2023-24 school year, who eagerly participate in a variety of activities. Students expressed thanks to Rey-Castellanos for her key role in supporting student learning, as well as encouraging investigation through science fair projects.
They also note that her encouragement and the positive environment of the ChemClub have led to notable achievements for some of its members. Several students have excelled in science fair competitions, for example, moving on to regional and even national levels. Some topics the students explored in their winning science fair projects have included mitigating radon in the environment by using carbon filters and investigating the composition of mushrooms.
Also, in spring 2023, one club member won the “Best in Fair” award at the prestigious Lockheed Martin Science Challenge in Orlando, and was also honored with an award at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Additionally, this year the Vanguard High School ChemClub clinched the title of ChemBowl champions, by showcasing their knowledge and passion for chemistry in a competitive setting.
In addition to academic achievements, the club’s members also make time for the tradition of celebrating Mole Day each October 23, a festive occasion dedicated to commemorating Avogadro’s Constant and the study of chemistry.
