Getting Charged Word Find Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

ACTIVITY in Electricity, Cathode, Anode, Electrons. Last updated October 15, 2024.

Summary

In this activity, students are challenged to see how familiar they are with the vocabulary of batteries, electrolytes, and galvanic cells. In place of a word bank, the definition for each word is given, and students must determine the words that they are searching for.

Grade Level

Middle School

Objectives

By the end of this activity, students should be able to

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the vocabulary connected to batteries, electrolytes, and galvanic cells.

Chemistry Topics

This activity supports students’ understanding of

  • Electrochemistry
  • Electricity
  • Ions
  • Anode
  • Cathode

Time

Teacher Preparation: 10 minutes
Lesson: 30 minutes

Materials

  • Student Handout (two versions are available)

Safety

  • No specific safety precautions need to be observed for this activity.

Teacher Notes

  • All of the words and definitions used in this activity are also highlighted in the associated demonstration, “Getting Charged” and the lab, “Comparing Batteries Made from Different Citrus Fruits”.
  • Puzzle 1 is designed to be easier because the hidden words are arranged in only two directions (horizontally left to right, or vertically top to bottom). In Puzzle 2 the words can go in five directions (horizontally left to right, horizontally right to left, vertically top to bottom, vertically bottom to top, or diagonally).
  • Students will develop a word list to use in the puzzle by reading through each definition and determining the correct vocabulary word that it describes.
  • When the word list is complete, students can start searching for the words in the puzzle.
  • This activity can be done independently or with a partner.
  • The Super Teacher Worksheets website was used to generate the puzzles.

For the Student

Getting Charged Puzzle 1

Challenge your knowledge of the vocabulary of batteries, electrolytes, and galvanic cells.

  • In place of a word bank definitions are given, you will make a list of the words you are searching for.
  • When your word list is complete, start searching for the words in the puzzle. Use a marker to highlight them or circle them with a pencil.
  • Hidden words can be found horizontally or vertically when searching in this puzzle.
